Professional Education in Clinical Hypnosis
Here are some examples of seminars and workshop formats that I have used successfully. I am most interested in composing a professional educational experience that best fits your needs.
Participation in clinical hypnosis training is restricted to licensed health care professionals with a minimum of a Master’s degree, in accordance with the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis Standards of Training and Code of Conduct. Trainees enrolled in a Masters degree or higher level program may participate with the approval of their Program Director. We do not support the training of unlicensed practitioners in hypnosis and the healing arts.
Seminars
60-90 minute Lectures with discussion introducing clinical hypnosis, biofeedback especially with children. These have been delivered at University Grand Rounds, Continuing Medical Education programs and as part of multi-disciplinary professional workshops. Examples include:

Putting Hypnosis into Practice: fundamentals of hypnosis and biofeedback and how they can be integrated into clinical pediatrics. |

Paying Attention to Tension: basic psychobiology of stress and how stress reduction techniques can be integrated into clinical pediatrics. |

Minding Habits: Behavioral strategies that help children help children change their habits. |

The Physiology of Fascination: What the latest neuroscience tells us about how hypnosis and creativity change our brains and it’s implications for clinical practice. |

Finding Comfort: Hypnosis for children and adolescents with acute, procedural and chronic pain. |

Coping with Chronic Disease: Using hypnosis, biofeedback and relaxation therapies to help children and adolescents with chronic disease develop healthy coping strategies for symptom management and to modulate physiological stress. |
1-Day Workshops
A six-hour Workshop typically includes a combination of lecture, demonstration, clinical case discussion and role playing centered around any of the Seminar Topics, above. A typical Workshop has a faculty:participant ratio of 1:8 and the following schedule:

3-Day Workshops
These are introductory level workshops on hypnosis with children and adolescents using an American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH)-approved curriculum. When completed with a signed certificate, participants are eligible for membership in ASCH providing other membership requirements are met. These workshops are Directed by Dr. Sugarman and usually taught by a team of his colleagues as faculty in order to maintain a faculty:participant ratio of 1:8. Co-faculty have included, Daniel P. Kohen, MD, Ran Anbar, MD, Julie Linden, Ph.D., Howard Hall, Psy.D., Karen Olness, MD, Robert Deutsch, Ph.D. These events are usually sponsored by a university or a professional organization.

This workshop curriculum and format, when directed by Laurence Sugarman, M.D., has been approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) as meeting their requirements for an Introductory Workshop in Clinical Hypnosis. Completion of an approved introductory level workshop is required for regular membership in ASCH. Participants completing the entire workshop and meeting other membership requirements may use the documented credit hours for application to ASCH as Full Members. In addition, these workshop hours can be credited towards Certification of Training and Certified Consultant Status programs through ASCH.
